As an art institution, Kalakshetra holds certain values in events organised on campus. As delegates, it would be incumbent on us to respect and uphold the traditions of our hosts.
Smoking
Smoking is not permitted anywhere on the campus.
Food and Drink
Kalakshetra is a strictly vegetarian campus (not even eggs and seafood will be included). Consumption of alcohol is not allowed on the campus. Traditional cooked South Indian breakfast will be served every morning at the venue, except for January 5, 2009. Delegates will also be provided traditional South Indian lunch and dinner on January 6, 7 and 8, 2009. Water will be available throughout the day. Tea and coffee will be available at break times. All of these food and drink options are available to delegates free of charge.
In addition, stalls stocking snacks and beverages will be available on campus during the hours of the Congress. Delegates wishing to consume items from these stalls will have to do so at their own expense.
Clothing
January tends to be the coolest month of the year in Chennai with the temperatures averaging 28 Celsius (max) and 20 Celsius (min). There is no air-conditioning at either of the venues. Cotton clothing is recommended. Suits for men are definitely not necessary. Collar T-shirts and coloured half sleeve shirts with trousers are acceptable. Shorts are not permitted for men and women and it is appropriate for women to cover shoulders and legs. Light weight cotton trousers and skirts would be acceptable.
Footwear
In India, footwear has to be removed and left outside most traditional environments, and so is the case with Kalakshetra. At both the venues, there will be designated areas for leaving your footwear. We recommend that you wear easily removable footwear. Given the conditions, sandals, open toes and slip-ons are recommended.
Facilities at Kalakshetra
There are no shops or restaurants on campus, but it is expected that there will be several stalls displaying and selling various Indian garments/handicrafts. We expect to make available a business centre from where delegates may access emails and make telephone calls for a fee. The seating at Kalakshetra will be on cane chairs, which complement the aesthetics of the traditional architecture. There will be Indian and Western style toilets. There will also be a Travel Desk and a money changer in place for the duration of the Congress. |
